Whenever anybody turns on the television, they are instantly bombarded with commercials for online dating websites like Match.com, eHarmony, and OkCupid. Dating apps such as Tinder  and PlentyOfFish have drastically risen in popularity over the past several years. Many people find online dating to be a more convenient alternative to meeting significant others in person. In fact, approximately 20% of Americans between ages 25 and 34 years old have used online dating apps or websites. Of those, 5% have found a spouse or are in a committed relationship with a person they found while online dating.

Despite the advantages of being able to find a date while sitting at home, there are also several major drawbacks. The number of rapes caused by online dating websites have increased six-fold since 2009 and crimes related to Tinder and Grindr have increased seven-fold. Eighty-five percent of victims of online dating date rape were women between the ages of 20-29 years old.

On online dating, WHRHS health teacher Ms. Gleeson commented; “In today’s society online dating is becoming a “norm” and a way to meet other individuals with similar interests.  In my opinion, online dating can be a good avenue to meet a potential dating partner, however many safety precautions must be considered…The one problem with online dating is the false identity that some people provide…If you do plan to meet up with someone from online, it is essential to take proper precautions— meet in an open public area; bring a friend with you or at least tell friends/family where and when you are meeting this individual and provide them with a safety call or text to let them know that you arrived there safely… Regardless of online dating or more traditional dating, safety precautions are a must.”

Online dating can be fun and more convenient than traditional dating, but users should always be aware of the possible danger. Safety should always be the number one priority.
