On October 17, 2017 the Watchung Hills Warriors Girls Tennis Team hosted the finals of the NJSIAA North 2, Group 4 Sectional Championship on their home court. It was a low humidity, sunny day when the Ridge Devils came to play. The Ridge team is the defending 2016 Group 4 champs. Ridge had won an earlier team match on these same courts. This was going to be a tough afternoon.

When Ridge’s Navya Yemula posted the first score, a 6-1 6-0 win over Ruchi Biswas at third singles, the crowd became a little worried. But the Warriors’ first doubles tandem of Sophie Weaver and Caitlin Yang came in with a straight set win (6-4 6-2) over Ridge to tie things up.

Freshman Sydney Sharma quickly followed with her own win at first singles.  This brought the team score to 2-1 in favor of the Warriors. In reflecting upon this tournament final’s win in just  her first year on the team, Sydney said, “Being able to make it all the way here is honestly kind of surreal but nonetheless amazing. Having such supportive team, I think, has been one of the best parts about my whole experience…”

This left two flights still on the courts, second doubles pair Elyssa Van Houtte and Emiline Fahmy, and second singles Brenda Peng. In both matches, Ridge won the first set and Watchung Hills won the second. Then, Ridge won the second doubles match, bringing the score to 2-2.

Four year varsity starter and team captain Brenda Peng was the last match left on the courts, playing her third set. Her opponent, Camille Shen, was familiar to her. Brenda had beaten Shen in the County Championships and on a prior regular season match.

In selecting on the match, Brenda confessed, “The third set was, without a doubt, nerve-wracking. But I knew that I was mentally stronger…and with my teams’ support I would pull through.”

And Brenda Peng pulled through with a three set win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. It has been many years since the Watchung Hills Girls Tennis Team has had a state title, but the work is not yet done.  Next up is the Group 4 Finals, where the North 2 champions Watchung Hills will face the South champions Vineland for sectionals on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Mercer County Park.
